slice256 - 20$/month - 256 ram, 10GB space, 100GB Bandwidth

Some Features:

Full root access and rebooting
Choice of Linux distro
Dedicated IP address and Tier-1 redundant bandwidth
Reserved RAM

Slicehost is a VPS ( Virtual Private Server ) provider, where you can have full control of your “server”.

These servers are virtual, and to do that they use Xen to virtualize the machines in their Quad-core servers.

I needed a server for personal and work related issues, and a dedicated server is just to expensive.

I’ll tell you my thoughts when I do some more tests

Estes servidores são virtuais, sendo que a malta do SliceHost usa o Xen para criar as máquinas virtuais nos seus servidores Quad-core.

Precisave de um servidor para alguns fins pessoais e de trabalho, e um servidor dedicado era demasiado caro.

Mirrors for Ubuntu

Docx in OpenOffice - odf-converter-1.1-7

[lang_en]Some time ago, Novell released a new version of their odf-converter, that allows you to open OpenXML files (docx, xlsx, pptx) in OpenOffice 2.X.

I know that OO.o 2.3 opens docx files already, but this plugin gives better support to that “format” for does who need to open it.

I’ve created a .deb to install in Ubuntu, you can get it HERE (32bits)

[lang_pt]A uns tempos que a Novell lançou a nova versão do seu odf-converter, que permite abrir ficheiros OpenXML (docx, xlsx, pptx) no OpenOffice 2.X.

Eu sei que o OO.o 2.3 já suporta ficheiros docx, mas este plugin permite um melhor suporte a este “formato” para aqueles que têm de o abrir.

Emesene 1.0 Released!

[lang_en]Finally emesene 1.0 is out!

Emesene is a very simple, light Instant Messenger for the Windows Messenger network.

Things that were left in this release:

Try it out, its my choice for the WLM network in Ubuntu

Recomendo a quem não gostar do peso do Amsn e que não gosta do pidgin.

The 1.0 release of Wine is tenatively scheduled for he 15th anniversary of the project (roughly 1 June 2008, if you take Dan Dulitz’ message as the start of the project,

Over the last six or so months, the wine developers have identified 180 or so bugs as possibly being worth fixing
before the 1.0 release.

63 of the Wine 1.0 bugs have already been fixed:

101 are left to fix:

Firefox 3 beta 3 - Ubuntu Gutsy

[lang_en] Installing the latest Firefox 3.0 Beta 3 in Ubuntu Gutsy is really simple and you just have to use Synaptic. Just enable the Backport repositorie and install Firefox 3 b3.

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

Settings - Repositories - Updates Tab

Enable “Unsuportted Updates (gutsy-backports)“, close, and press RELOAD

Now, just search for Firefox 3 and install it

You will still have Firefox 2 installed together with FF3

Associação Ensino Livre!

Basically, me and another 2 guys formed an association to spread Free Software (Software Livre) in schools.

[lang_pt]Tudo começou a uns meses quando eu e o Rui Az. decidimos criar o Ubuntu Escolas, uma iniciativa ligada a comunidade portuguesa de Ubuntu. Passado 1 mês a ideia evoluio para o Escolas Livres, qualquer tipo de software livre nas escolas, não só Ubuntu.

O Projecto foi crescendo e começou a ser divulgado.

O Ricardo Lobo juntou-se a nós, e lançou o desafio ” Porque não uma associação? “e pronto o resto é história, muitos emails enviados, muita conversa em IM, e finalmente temos a Associação Ensino Livre!

Obrigado a todos pelo vosso apoio!

1. divulgação de software livre e conteúdos livres junto dos agentes de ensino;
2. acções pedagógicas junto de professores e alunos;
3. aconselhamento sobre software livre e conteúdos livres junto dos agentes de ensino;
4. desenvolvimento e suporte a software livre, especialmente de vocação educacional;
5. manutenção e promoção de pontos de reunião da comunidade de software livre;
