Compiz vs Beryl

December 27, 2006 – 11:00 pm

Beryl is getting famous, but no one is talking about Compiz were it all “started” .

Beryl and Compiz are two “compositing window managers” for the X Window System that are able to take advantage of OpenGL-acceleration. They bring some of the features found in competitors like Mac OS.

Compiz was released by Novell, and is known to be more stable, light and practical than Beryl. I also think the same. I’ve tested both and my machine ( Centrino 1.6, 512 ram, ATI 9200 64 Mb with Radeon driver ) and its faster with Compiz than Beryl (in the actual time with Compiz 0.3.4 and Beryl 0.1.3).

Beryl is the new name of the Project Quinnstorm, a branch of Compiz. It’s developing quickly and has mutch more plugins that Compiz. Its just a matter of time and pacience for the final final in february and see the result.

Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn is going to have Beryl by default so we expect something fast and great :D
