Reading the latest Wine Weekly Newsletter 329, they talk about Cedega and its relationship with Wine.
In the begin of the Cedega/Wine Benchmarks you can read:
Cedega’s core is based off the original Wine tree and was forked in 2002. There are several core components that no longer share a similarity with Wine as it exists today.
Transgaming has not actively contributed to Wine in about 5 years with the exception of a few patches (less than 5 a year.)
The article points also at THIS ARTICLE where the benchmark is done and.. Wine has a better performance that Cedega 6.0
According to this South AFrican site, ubuntu is a Zulu word that roughly translates as “humanity towards others”. In South Africa we hear it used all the time… “the spirit of ubuntu”, “philosophy of ubuntu”, “the ubuntu way”. Well my basic understanding of the concept is that it means working together to achieve common goals no matter your race, religion or creed.
Ford illustrates the meaning of ubuntu in this ad.
A point of notice for 7.10 is that there is going to be a new branch ( like kubuntu/xubuntu/edubuntu ) but 100% Free software, following the guide of GnewSence.
“(…) no firmware, drivers, imagery, sounds, applications, or other content which do not include full source materials and come with full rights of modification, remixing and redistribution (…) “
This looks like a response to critics for having included proprietary drivers. Lets see what will be the result.
Having Composite by default also looks like an objective, now closer with the work already done in Feisty.
What is update-alternatives? Well the man page tells you this:
update-alternatives creates, removes, maintains and displays information about the symbolic links comprising the Debian alternatives system.
It is possible for several programs fulfilling the same or similar functions to be installed on a single system at the same time. For example, many systems have several text editors installed at once. (…)
A generic name in the filesystem is shared by all files providing interchangeable functionality. (…) For example, if the text editors ed and nvi are both installed on the system, the alternatives system will cause the generic name /usr/bin/editor to refer to /usr/bin/nvi by default.
This means, for example, that if you have Epiphany Browser and Firefox installed on your system, but you want the default to be Epiphany, you just have to run the command “sudo update-alternatives –config x-www-browser” and chose Epiphany.
To get a list of the available optins you can config, run “ls -l /etc/alternatives”.
And while searching for info on update-alternatives I found Galternatives. It’s a GUI for update-alternatives, so a user can customize is system easily.
Just saw this on Slashdot. It looks like due to legal dispute with AOL, the Project Gaim has decided to change their name to Pidgin. This dispute also prevented any other releases than the Betas. You can read more about it here.
The project is in migration to the new hosts.
